Episode 123 – Portugal – Central Lisbon and Sintra

I hope you enjoyed this episode.  We stayed at Pensao Pracada Figueira near the Rossio Metro Stop. Go find Ginja Liqueur for some cherry greatness.  Look for the Ginjinha small store front. The funicular up to the Barrio Alto neighborhood is called Elevator de Gloria.  The park to the right of the funicular is called Sao Pedro de Alcantara Park, and the Port Wine Institute is right across the street.  We enjoyed the neighborhoodbar called Porta Azul Bar.  See if you can find it.  We went from there to the 16th century church called St. Rogue.  Then it was to the oldest beer hall in Lisbon called Cervejaria Trindade, and don’t forget to ask for their beer snacks Tremocos. From there we went to Convento do Carmo, which is the church that was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, and we finished the neighborhood tour at the modern Armazens do Chiado Mall.  The lower neighborhood is called Baixa and you can find The George pub and restaurant, and the Delirium Cafe.

Sintra is an easy ride from central Lisbon.  The trains leave out of Rossio Station to Sintra.  The three main sites are the Morrish Castle, Pena Palace, and the Sintra National Palace.  Bus 434 takes you to these locations.  Bus 435 takes you to other palaces/mansions in the area as well.  The bus tickets are good for 24 hours.  One one to save time and money would be to take an Uber up to Pena Palace then down to the Sintra National Palace and then walk back to the train station.

The local restaurant under our hotel is called Pastelaria D Joao 1.  They must have different locations. The craft brewpub we went to is called Cerveja Canil Baixa.

The Alfama neighborhood holds the St. George Castle, and Largo Santa Luzia Square which overlooks the cruise port.  This area is a nice place to sit outside and have a drink.  Enjoy your time in Lisbon!
